Strokes or Brain attack may result from either blockages in the carotid artery (which supplies blood to the brain) or from bleeding within the brain itself from defects in the wall of smaller arteries within the brain. We perform Carotid endarterectomy , an operation that unblocks the artery in the neck to prevent clots from this site travelling up to the brain and causing strokes. It is performed to prevent a major stroke in a patient in whom the blockage has been detected as part of a screening scan for someone with underlying heart disease or who has had a minor stroke that serves as a warning sign.
